Understanding BYOK

Bring Your Own Key — what it means and why it exists

Some features in Examora use Claude AI by Anthropic. Instead of bundling AI costs into the license price — which would make it more expensive for everyone regardless of usage — Examora uses your personal Anthropic API key. You pay Anthropic directly for exactly what you use.

Create a free Anthropic account
Go to console.anthropic.com. Sign up with your email. No cost to create an account.
Step 02
Add credit — minimum $5
Go to Billing → Add Credit. Minimum purchase is $5. Credits don't expire. Anthropic prompts you to recharge when your balance runs low.
Step 03
Save your key — you choose how
In Examora, tap Set AI Key and choose: keep it in memory for this session only, or save it encrypted on your device using your PIN. ENKI servers never see your key.

Your key is held in browser memory only. It is never written to storage of any kind. It disappears automatically when you close the tab, reload, or after 20 minutes of inactivity. No one can extract it from your device after the session ends.
Encrypted Local
🔒 Encrypted with Your PIN
Your key is encrypted using AES-256-GCM with a key derived from your PIN via PBKDF2-SHA-256 (200,000 iterations, random salt). Only the encrypted ciphertext is stored on your device — the raw key is never written anywhere. Each session requires your PIN to decrypt it into memory. You can delete it at any time.
✓ ENKI servers never receive your API key — not during setup, not during AI calls, not ever.
✓ Your key is sent to Anthropic only — directly from your browser when you run an AI feature. That is what it is designed to do.
✓ Deleting the saved key requires your PIN. An accidental tap or someone else opening the app cannot remove it without the correct PIN.
◎ If you don't use AI features, you don't need a key at all. Authoring, shuffling, and exporting work fully offline and are free.

We do not collect, transmit to, or store your API key on ENKI servers. In temporary mode the key exists only in browser memory. In encrypted local mode only ciphertext is stored on your device — the raw key is never written anywhere. When AI runs, your key goes directly from your browser to Anthropic. We are not in that path.

Open the camera inside Examora. Place each sheet in front of your phone, tap Scan. Claude Haiku reads every bubble — distinguishing filled, blank, and multi-marked answers — and matches the student by sequence number. Takes 2–4 seconds per sheet.

When all sheets are scanned, a ranked results table shows every student's score, percentage, and pass/fail status. Export to Excel or Word with one tap. Flagged sheets (multi-marked, blank, duplicate scans) go to a manual review panel before results are finalized.

What the AI reads from each sheet

Claude Haiku (vision model) reads: the sequence number (#001–#100 or student name from the header), and every bubble on the sheet — distinguishing clearly filled, blank, and multi-marked answers. Typical processing: 2–4 seconds per sheet. Flagged items go to a resolution panel for manual review before grading is applied.
